Delicious traditional ancient greek doughnuts & how to make them recipe with detailed instructions and nutritional information.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 packet (about 2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (100°F to 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon, freshly ground
  • pinch of salt
  • vegetable oil for frying, neutral like canola or sunflower oil
  • powdered sugar for garnish
  • honey for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining 1 packet of active dry yeast with 1 cup of warm water and 2 tablespoons of sugar in a medium bowl, then let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Pour the frothy yeast mixture into the bowl with the flour mixture and stir gently until it forms a sticky dough, adding more warm water if necessary.
  4. Turn out the sticky dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about half an inch thick before cutting out circles using a glass or cookie cutter.
  7. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot over medium heat to about 350°F, then fry each donut until golden brown on both sides, usually around 2-3 minutes per side.
  8. Remove the fried doughnuts from the oil and let them drain on paper towels before garnishing with powdered sugar or drizzling with honey.

Notes

Store doughnuts in an airtight container.

Reheat in the oven for crispiness.

Serve with honey or cinnamon sugar.

Add a pinch of salt to enhance flavor.
