Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup plain yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Chopped fresh parsley or coriander (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm milk with the sugar and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir to blend evenly.
  3. Make the dough: Pour the yeast mixture and yogurt into the flour mixture. Stir with a spoon or hand until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead it for 5–6 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel or wrap, and let it rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until doubled.
  6. Divide the dough: After rising, punch down the dough and divide it into 6–8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
  7. Shape the naan: On a floured surface, roll each ball into an oval or tear-drop shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Prepare garlic butter: Melt the butter in a small saucepan, add the minced garlic, and sauté over low heat for 1–2 minutes. Set aside.
  9. Cook the naan: Heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Place one piece of dough in the pan and cook for 1–2 minutes until bubbles form. Flip and cook for another minute, pressing gently. Remove and keep warm.
  10. Brush with garlic butter: Immediately brush the hot naan with garlic butter and sprinkle with chopped parsley or coriander, if using.
  11. Repeat: Cook and brush all remaining naan pieces in the same way. Serve warm.

Notes

The dough can be made ahead and refrigerated after the first rise.

You can add chopped herbs or seeds to the dough for extra flavor.

Adjust thickness to preference—thinner naan will be crisper, thicker will be softer.
