Made without deep frying and crafted from simple pantry ingredients, they offer all the crisp, cinnamon-sugar joy of traditional churros—just in bite-sized, wholesome form. Perfect for snacking, sharing, or satisfying a sweet tooth any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter
  • ½ cup warm milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Cooking spray for air fryer

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Create a well in the center. Add the olive oil, warm milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for 2–3 minutes until smooth.
  4. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes to relax.
  5. Roll the dough into a ¼-inch thick rectangle. Cut into small, equal-sized squares or rectangles.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 180°C (350°F) for 3 minutes. Spray the basket with cooking spray.
  7. Place churro bites in a single layer in the basket, not touching. Lightly spray the tops.
  8. Air fry for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crisp.
  9. While warm, toss the bites in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
  10. Serve warm as-is or with a dip such as Greek yogurt or dark chocolate.

Notes

Dough can be made ahead and stored chilled for 1 day.

Bites can be frozen raw and air fried directly from frozen—just extend cooking time slightly.

Cinnamon sugar coating adheres best while bites are hot.

Use any milk alternative if needed.
