The Flying Dutchman Burger with Caramelized Onion Buns is a gourmet-style burger that balances sweet, savory, and smoky flavors. Soft, slightly sweet buns, perfectly cooked beef patties, turkey bacon, chicken ham, and caramelized onions come together to create a satisfying, versatile meal perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 4 slices turkey bacon
  • 4 slices chicken ham
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 4 buns (homemade or store-bought caramelized onion buns)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese slices, condiments

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onions and sprinkle 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir frequently until onions are soft and golden brown, about 15–20 minutes. Remove from heat.
  2. In the same skillet, cook turkey bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels. Lightly sear chicken ham slices for 1–2 minutes per side. Set aside.
  3. Divide ground beef into 4 portions and shape each into a patty slightly larger than the buns. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.
  4. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Let rest for 2–3 minutes.
  5. Slice and lightly toast the buns until golden and slightly crisp.
  6. Assemble the burger: bottom bun → beef patty → chicken ham → turkey bacon → caramelized onions → optional toppings → top bun. Press lightly to secure.
  7. Serve immediately with your choice of sides.

Notes

Caramelized onions can be made in advance and stored up to 3 days in the refrigerator.

Patties can be shaped and seasoned ahead of time to save prep time.

Toast buns just before serving for best texture.
