Delicious crusty italian bread recipe with detailed instructions and nutritional information.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (about 2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water (between 100°F and 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine 1 packet of active dry yeast with 1 teaspoon of sugar and ¾ cup of warm water in a small bowl.
  2. Stir gently and let the mixture sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy and bubbly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt until evenly combined.
  4. Pour the yeast mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients along with 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  5. Mix everything together using a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  6. Lightly flour your countertop and transfer the dough onto it.
  7. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  8. Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about an hour.
  9. Punch down the risen dough and transfer it back onto your floured surface.
  10. Shape the dough into a round loaf by tucking in the edges towards the center until smooth on top.
  11. Place the shaped loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or dusted with cornmeal.
  12. Cover again with a cloth and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffed up nicely.
  13. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  14. Make shallow slashes on top of the loaf with a sharp knife just before placing it in the oven.
  15. Bake in preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes until golden brown on top.
