This recipe shows you how to make perfectly crispy mini blooming onions using an air fryer. It’s a healthier, quick, and easy alternative to deep frying. Bite-sized and flavorful, these onions make a fantastic appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 small pearl or cocktail onions, peeled
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • Water (for dipping)
  • Cooking oil spray (olive or avocado oil)

Instructions

  1. Peel the small onions carefully, keeping the petals intact.
  2. Pat the onions dry with a paper towel to remove any moisture.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  4. Dip each onion briefly in water to moisten.
  5. Dredge the wet onion into the flour mixture, pressing gently to coat well between the petals.
  6. Dip the coated onion again in water, then dredge again in the flour mixture for a double coating.
  7. Lightly spray the coated onions with cooking oil spray.
  8. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Place the onions in a single layer inside the air fryer basket without crowding.
  10. Air fry for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through for even crisping.
  11. Remove when golden and crispy. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use mini onions for the best blooming effect.

Double coating ensures extra crunch.

Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket.

Adjust seasoning to your taste by adding chili powder or dried herbs if desired.
