The Toasted Italian Sandwich is a classic, flavorful sandwich that combines crispy bread, savory turkey bacon, tender chicken ham, melty cheese, and fresh vegetables. It’s perfect for lunch, a quick dinner, or a satisfying snack. Its versatility and simplicity make it a favorite for home cooking, while the toasted finish adds an irresistible crunch.

Ingredients

  • Sliced Italian or ciabatta bread
  • Turkey bacon
  • Chicken ham
  • Provolone or mozzarella cheese slices
  • Fresh lettuce
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Red onion, thinly sliced
  • Olive oil or light mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard or preferred sandwich spread
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: roasted red peppers, pickles, fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. Prepare any optional ingredients.
  2. Cook turkey bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crisp, then drain on paper towels.
  3. Lightly warm chicken ham slices in the same skillet.
  4. Slice the bread horizontally and brush the inside lightly with olive oil or mayonnaise.
  5. Place lettuce on the bottom slice as a barrier to prevent sogginess.
  6. Layer sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onion over the lettuce. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  7. Add turkey bacon and chicken ham evenly.
  8. Place cheese slices on top of the meat and vegetables.
  9. Add optional ingredients like roasted peppers or fresh basil.
  10. Spread Dijon mustard or preferred sandwich spread on the top slice of bread.
  11. Toast the sandwich in a preheated skillet or panini press over medium heat for 3–5 minutes per side until golden and cheese melts.
  12. Let the sandwich rest for one minute, then slice diagonally and serve.

Notes

Prepare ingredients in advance for faster assembly.

Use a lid on the skillet to help cheese melt evenly if a panini press isn’t available.

Customize with vegetables, spreads, or cheeses to your preference.
