Better Than Anything Toffee is a simple, irresistible candy made with pantry staples like butter, brown sugar, crackers, and chocolate chips. Perfect for the holidays, gift-giving, or anytime you crave something sweet and crunchy. This recipe comes together quickly, doesn’t require a candy thermometer, and is incredibly easy to customize with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 35 crackers)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Sea salt for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a rimmed 9×13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Lightly spray with cooking spray.
  2. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared pan. Break crackers as needed to fully cover the surface.
  3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Stir until combined. Bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, stop stirring and allow it to boil undisturbed for 3 minutes.
  4. Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture over the crackers. Use a spatula to spread it evenly before it begins to set.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 to 6 minutes, until the toffee is bubbling.
  6. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let sit for 1 to 2 minutes until the chips begin to melt.
  7. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee using a spatula.
  8. Sprinkle chopped nuts and sea salt (if using) over the melted chocolate. Gently press toppings down.
  9. Cool the toffee at room temperature for 30 minutes. Transfer to the refrigerator and chill for at least 1 hour, or until completely set.
  10. Once firm, lift the toffee from the tray and break into pieces by hand or with a knife. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

Substitute chopped nuts with crushed pretzels or toffee bits for a nut-free version.

For extra flavor, try using dark chocolate chips or swirling in a few white chocolate chips while spreading.

Avoid stirring the toffee mixture after it starts boiling to ensure a smooth texture.

To make slicing easier, lightly score the chocolate before chilling.
